Our Transmission Services Include:

Automatic Transmission
Automatic transmissions shift gears seamlessly, optimizing driving performance by adjusting gears based on various factors. These transmissions typically feature four to five forward gear ratios, along with a Reverse, Park, and Neutral gear. Shifting between gears occurs automatically once the car is in Drive, eliminating the need for a clutch pedal or manual gear shifting, as in a Manual Transmission.

Clutch
Your car's clutch serves the vital function of enabling the engine and gearbox to engage and disengage during gear changes. This process allows the engine's output shaft to keep spinning while relieving pressure on the gears, preventing them from shifting improperly.

Four-Wheel Drive Transmission
Four-wheel drive (4x4) vehicles boast differential gears, front and rear axles, and a transfer case connected to the transmission. The maintenance of four-wheel drive vehicles necessitates care for the transfer case, front and rear differentials, and transmission fluids. For top-tier service regarding your four-wheel drive transmission, visit us at 8646 St Charles Rock Rd.

Front-Wheel Drive Transmission
In front-wheel drive vehicles, the engine exclusively drives the front wheels. Power flows through the transmission to the final drive, then splits and propels the two front wheels through the drive axles. Front-wheel drive vehicles position the engine, transmission, and related components at the front of the car. For front-wheel drive transmission repairs, rely on Floyd's Tire & Car Care in St. Louis, MO.

Manual Transmission
Manual Transmission vehicles involve the use of a clutch pedal and gear shift to manually change gears, determined by the vehicle's speed. Manual transmissions can encompass two to eight gears and are categorized into front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive configurations. Typically, manual transmissions require less maintenance than automatic ones.

Transfer Cases
A transfer case is a component of four-wheel drive systems in four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. It receives power from the transmission and directs it to both front and rear axles. Transfer cases can be chain-driven in most contemporary vehicles. These components connect to the transmission, front and rear axles through drive shafts to ensure maximum control.

Transmission Fluid FAQs

What are signs that you need to change your transmission fluid?

The most obvious sign that it's time to change your transmission fluid is a warning light on the dashboard. Other signs may include engine revving when accelerating or turning, difficulty shifting gears, a chattering noise when you start driving, a slight burning smell, or fluid leaking beneath the vehicle. If you're uncertain about a noise, leak, or unusual driving condition, bring your vehicle to Floyd's Tire & Car Care in St. Louis for an inspection.

How often do you really need to change transmission fluid?

The recommended interval depends on the type of transmission. Most automatic transmissions require a fluid change every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Manual transmissions generally need fresh fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Following your manufacturer's maintenance schedule is the best way to maximize transmission performance and longevity.

Does a car run better after a transmission fluid change?

Yes. Replacing old transmission fluid can help improve transmission performance, promote smoother shifting, and reduce unnecessary wear on internal components. A properly functioning transmission also reduces strain on the engine, which can contribute to better overall vehicle performance and fuel efficiency.

What is the average life of a transmission?

Regular fluid changes, filter replacements, and routine maintenance are essential for maximizing transmission life. Most modern automatic transmissions can last between 100,000 and 200,000 miles when properly maintained. Manual transmissions often last even longer and may exceed 250,000 miles with proper care.

Which type of transmission lasts the longest?

Manual transmissions generally have fewer moving parts and often require less maintenance than automatic transmissions. They are also less dependent on specialized fluids and electronic controls. As a result, vehicles equipped with manual transmissions frequently achieve longer transmission lifespans when properly maintained.

What our clients are saying about us

We have established longterm and stable partnerships with various clients thanks to our excellence in solving their automotive needs!

Drove in from Ohio Friday night. Car broke down on busy I-70. Called AAA for auto shop recommendations, they gave me two that were the closest. Called the first only to be told can't help us. Second call was to Floyd's. They said get car there in the morning and we'll look at it. Dropped car off, spoke with Nikki and left. Returned a few hours later and was told all checks came back good (no codes or mechanical history showing why it broke down). They ran car thru the paces and still found all okay. I cannot thank the team there that Saturday enough for looking into our car issue. This allowed us that peace of mind to drive back home. We highly recommend Floyd's to everyone who has auto needs. They are fair, friendly and go well above expectations for service. quotes-image

I drove to St. Louis area for a business meeting. 6 hour drive. Had some issues with my Dodge Durango on the way down, but made it in time for my meeting. When meeting was done for the day(around 6:30) I tried to start my car and found it would not start. I called Floyds. They had a tow truck there within an hour. The next day, by 2 pm they had left me a message saying it was fixed and I could come and get it. AND...the price for towing and repair were acceptable. Very fair and car now works as it should. Thank you Floyds.quotes-image
